The Afon Ogwen has its source at grid reference 667 663 at around 750 metres above sea level. The river falls rapidly in height over its first 500 metres to reach the Ffynon Loer tarn at 600m above sea level. The Afon Ogwen then falls another 300 meters to reach Llyn Ogwen.
On leaving Llyn Ogwen the river tumbles 100 metres down the Ogwen falls to the head of the Nant Ffrancon valley. Once on the floor of the Nant Ffrancon the river falls less than 10 metres over the next 1,500m before reaching the stepping stones at GR 642 615, 5.5 km from the source.
